The World of Fishing
Fans of fishing always try new ways of getting that big one daily and sometimes inventing a new fishing knot may be their best hope. But, if you are a beginner, you’ll probably want to start with an already tried method for guaranteed results. The variety of such knots is surprisingly big as they all have various roles.
You can attach a line to a swivel or to the ever-popular hook, attach a line to a lure, connect the lines and so on. A good fishing knot is what you need for your very first fishing trip. Don’t worry, you don’t have to learn all the ways yet, just take easy steps and find with which choice you feel most comfortable.
What to Know Before Fishing
Obviously, like any sport, fishing also has a series of rules that you should follow in order to get the best results. Choosing the ideal fishing knot and tying it properly is the first thing you need to do. Before this, though, you should wet the knot a bit with some water or saliva, before you get to tightening it down.
Making sure your knot is tightened perfectly seems like a really obvious thing to mention, yet sometimes it can slip your mind, so we are mentioning it just to be sure. If the knot has tag ends you can trim the ends or cut them altogether. Finally, all you gotta do is practice as much as you can and you’ll become an expert in no time.
Snelling a Hook Via the Knotless Knot
The first knot we are presenting to you is one of the easiest so you’ll have less of a problem in succeeding with it. What makes it such a quick solution is the fact that this knot is used to attach a fishing line to the hook.
The very first step is cutting your leader line to the length you want it, following with the tying of a loop at the end portion which has the role of holding the bait. Very slowly, you have to insert the other end of the line through the eye (similar to getting ready to sow, isn’t it?) from the front to the back of the hook you are using.
You have to approximate the length the leader line will have once it is in the hook’s shank.
The second step is firmly holding the shank of the hook with the tag end of the leader line. Next, you will have to wrap it about seven or eight times. You have to start from the shank and work your way near the end of the leader line. A helpful tip is that you have to be sure the lines won’t overlap with one another – try to make them stay side by side.
The third step is to grab the other end of your leader line, finish wrapping the hook of the shank and carefully insert it to the front part of the eye of the hook.
The fourth and final step is to make your knot a bit wet with water or saliva and pull the other end of the leader line while you have a firm grip on the hook and on the line. This will make you sure everything is tight.
The Improved Clinch Knot
Another type of knot you can try is this one which is considered by many fishermen to be one that everybody should know because it’s very strong and highly reliable. It is often used by anglers in order to secure the hooks and lures to the fishing line. This knot is very good for big fishes as well.
The first step is to pass the tag end slowly via the eye of the hook, followed by wrapping it about seven times on the line.
The second step is inserting the tag end through a small loop, the one you can find to be closest to the eye of the hook. Afterward, you have to bring it back to the part of the line that is looser.
The third step is the one you are getting used to by now, which is adding moisture to the knot. Following this, you’ll have to tighten the two ends together. If it’s the case, you can trim the extra tag end.
The Palomar Knot
The Palomar Knot is considered to be one of the strongest types of knots and has the main function of attaching the line to the hook. The Palomar Knot is similar to the previous two presented as it has the main role of securing the hook to the end of the fishing line.
If you wish to make this type of knot, the first step you have to take is to double your line in order to create a loop. After you’ve done this, you have to be careful and insert the loop into the eye of the hook.
The second step is fairly easy as you have to create an overhand knot that is on the loose side. The third step is not that much harder either as you have to pay attention and move the loop through the end of the hook. Now you have to slowly pull the line, but don’t let go of the hook! As per the above, you can trim the extra tag end.
The Blood Knot
The next option on our list is the one called the Blood Knot, but, don’t worry, the meaning has nothing to do with you! This type of knot is used if you wish to tie or join together two parts of a fishing line that have about the same level of thickness.
This makes it different from the first three methods which were mostly used if you wanted to secure a fishing line to hooks or to lures. This type of knot is seen as one of the best from the bunch so you’ll have to try it someday.
For the first step, you’ll need to line a couple of inches of two ends from two lines, one against the other. Following this, you have to start wrapping one of the lines on the other for a minimum of five times.
The next step involves repeating the wrapping of the other line on the first line for about five times. The last part is bringing back the two loose ends to the hole that is in the middle.
Step three is working the knot out easily while being sure that both ends of the lines will remain in the position. To make it super snug you can pull on each part of the lines.
The Surgeon’s Knot
Another name you associate with blood, but you needn’t worry – just like the previous one, the Surgeon’s Knot is used for connecting two pieces of a fishing line. The main difference between these two knots is the fact that this one is recommended to be used if the lines have a different thickness or diameters.
Regarding the first step, you just have to lay the lines one on top of another and make sure that they manage to overlap with each other by several inches. The second step is to create an overhand knot which will lead to a simple loop, thus making the lines work as only one.
The third is to slowly pass not only the end of the tag but also the entire leader via the said created loop for about one to three times. The final step is to, again, add some moisture to this area and to carefully pull all of the four ends tight.
